Desert Queen Ranch mural, 29 Palms, California

Mural #25 - Keys' Desert Queen Ranch - "Mural-in-a-Weekend"

Artist: Art Mortimer, Twentynine Palms, CA
Dedicated: April 14, 2013
Location: 6348 Adobe Road

This mural was designed to replace the first Bill and Frances Keys mural (see Mural #1). Bill Keys arrived in the area in 1910 and was caretaker and later owner of the Desert Queen Mine in what is now Joshua Tree National Park. Bill homesteaded the nearby mill site, married Frances Mae Lawton in 1918, built a house, and raised a family on the isolated Desert Queen Ranch. This Mural-in-a-Weekend project was completed by a team of 70 volunteers, including officials from the City of Twentynine Palms, residents from surrounding areas, and visitors from out of state. Anyone wishing to volunteer was given a brush and section of mural to paint.
